It’s a Sunday morning. The birds are chit chatting, singing, dancing in the sky. I was supposed to be in California this weekend, and instead Im in the middle of the hills and the lagoon of my village here in Mexico. I have so much to share. This is the moment I would sit down with my coffee and have a chat with you inside Tras Bastidores, however, the internet here in my village is slower than turtles on a snail. For now, I will write SASY letters to you. I think it’s a great opportunity to practice longer format story telling, since lately my focus has been on writing poetry.
My desk is in front of a window, where all the morning light pierces through looking for me. I have a lot of ideas spinning in my head. I use my journal to do some morning pages, these blank sheets every morning serve as a brain dump. I find it very helpful unload my thoughts unto the paper first thing in the morning, this way I can consciously choose the thoughts I want to nurture for the day.
“ITS BETTER TO BE WORLD CLASS AT A FEW THINGS THAN MEDIOCRE AT MANY” - DARREN HARDY
Today, I woke up with inspiration for quite a particular writing piece: “ Historias Del Barrio” (Stories Of The Hood). It’s not my typical poetry, but it is the reality of my village.
Poetry is the truth, and without the truth, there cannot be any poetry.
As I began to expand on the idea for this writing piece, I started to catch myself repeating a habit that does not serve me: procrastinating my creative ideas.
“A PROBLEM IS AN APPORTUNITY TO GROW” - DARREN HARDY
This habit is the equivalent to meeting someone you really like, but postponing the invitation to dinner because you first want to think about it more. YES OR NO, nothing in between. This spoils the adventure of the journey; over analyzing dulls the magic. If I really really like someone, my energy is 100% invested. The connection with that particular person becomes my living teacher, which is why I am invested, doesn’t matter if its for 1 day or 100 days.
My creative ideas, my art, deserve my full devotion, as if it’s my lover,
BECAUSE IT IS MY BIGGEST LOVER!
Procrastination is often a habit we all must challenge at some point. There comes a time where you must ask yourself why it is that you run away, or worse, why it is that you don’t move, why do you remain stagnant?
I've reached that point…
" IF YOU WANT TO SAIL YOUR LIFE IN A NEW DIRECTION, YOU HAVE TO FIRST PICK UP THE ANCHORS OF BAD HABITS THAT HAVE BEEN WEIGHING YOU DOWN” DARREN HARDY
Which is why today instead of sitting with the idea of “Historias De Barrio” and leaving it for later to explore, I decided I would do something completely different. This time, I opened my laptop and began to type this SASY letter to you with the intention of creating momentum towards this idea.
MOVE.
I MUST MOVE.
YOU MUST MOVE.
WE MUST KEEP MOVING.
There’s something that happens when we move to the rhythm of our desires, something that leads you to the next thing, the next idea.
For example, i’ve been writing this letter in pauses, drinking my coffee, singing, dancing. In one of these pauses, I grabbed my pen and paper and a poem distilled through the ink. A poem about “Historias Del Barrio”… and just like that, I have began to write the piece without thinking about writing the piece— because when I write a poem, I never think, I feel, I only feel. The words come on their own. I dont use my mind to write poetry, no, no, I vowed to write the truth, and the truth lives in the heart.
Had I not moved, had I not opened my laptop to write this SASY letter to you, “Historias Del Barrio” would just be an idea on a paper that perhaps would receive my full attention tomorrow, or perhaps the sheet of paper would be its tombstone.
100 steps in the wrong direction will move you further than stagnancy ever will. Stagnancy breeds safety. Moving breeds momentum.
Our dreams require momentum. Our wings were meant to fly across oceans. We must continue to move. As minuscule as the move might be, its movement. A minuscule movement on the pendulum ripples into a strong swing. A grain of sand on an even scale can tilt the balance to one side. Don’t ever estimate your daily 1%.
What if I told you I would give you $1,000,000 OR the amount of a penny doubled every day for a month?
You would probably think that one million dollars sounds like a lot more than a handful of pennies, so perhaps you would choose the million dollars.
HOWEVER,
A penny a day doubled every day for 30 days would give you $5,368,709.19.
This is the power of the compound effect (which reminds me of the book in which I learned this concept… will list details below). 1% everyday will move you faster than 100% every other day. And by 1% I dont mean doing the bare minimum (although some days that will occur, and thats okay), however, with time your tolerance will strengthen, your capacity will expand, and so will your 1%. Before my 1% looked like writing one sentence a day, then it was writing 1 page a day, today its an entire letter, and eventually it will all compound into a book. This is how a book is written, one word at a time, one sentence at a time, one page at a time, one day at a time…
Like my dad loves to remind me: “no dejes para mañana lo que puedes hacer hoy”. Dont leave for tomorrow what you can do today. Tomorrow doesn’t exist. Tomorrow is composed of NOW.
It’s time to move amore,
spread your wings,
write,
love,
dream,
fly,
whatever you do,
keep moving…
